CKN: Security Architecture for Mobile Operators

Event Summary

Service providers occupy an increasingly important role in modern digital society and represent a growing target for hackers motivated by political agenda or financial reward. The barriers to cybercrime are low, and the rewards can be substantial. This risk is amplified by the evolving nature of the mobility network. With the transition to 5G, virtualization, and cloud technology, the potential number of attacks and threats on mobile networks is growing.

Security architectures need to evolve to take account of this evolving network and threat surface. Enforcement of security policy needs to be led by visibility across the network to enable networks to identify and stop threats before they disrupt and negatively affect their networks and customers. To protect against IP-based threats, mobile operators need to adopt a holistic approach to achieve robust security that helps protect data flows and workloads across mobile infrastructures.

Cisco combines a best-in-class security portfolio with an architectural approach for mobile operators that protects their mobile packet core and IP network from cyberattacks. Our approach helps secure enterprise users and mobile subscriber data and enables new services.

Primary takeaways:
  • Mobile network evolution opens new opportunities while simultaneously increasing the already substantial risk of targeted cyberattacks because of the growing attack surface.
  • A new holistic architectural approach to security is required to protect against IP-based threats, one that helps protect data flows and workloads across mobile infrastructures.
  • Our comprehensive architectural approach helps secure enterprise users and mobile subscriber data and enables new services.
