CKN: Preparing the Network for 5G Today: Cisco Highlights from MWC 2017
Event Summary
Digital business transformation is driving service providers toward several market dynamics: cloud, IoT, security, and 5G:
- More applications and workloads will move to the cloud because of scale and economic benefits. This will result in a fourfold increase in global cloud traffic through 2020.
- There will be more IoT. As data, people, processes, and devices become increasingly connected, through 2020 nearly half of total connected devices will be M2M.
- Video is already the majority of fixed and mobile traffic. This will continue to drive global mobile traffic to the tune of 8 times over the next 4 years. As the transition to 5G occurs, video will be one of the primary beneficiaries, with faster speed and improved quality.
The blending of these dynamics leads to a $2 trillion economic opportunity for service providers over the next decade through new services and operational savings. At Mobile World Congress 2017, Cisco introduced a number of updates to its Open Network Architecture to help service providers prepare their networks for the requirements for 5G, including new innovations in:
- Cloud-scale networking
- Automation and orchestration
- Security for mobility architectures
- Access-independent virtual mobile core for IoT
- Collaboration solutions for mobile
